About MWM Marine Surveys

8T7E0582 1920x1080

MW Marine Surveys is owned and operated by myself, Matthew Willett, and is part of the MWM Group. I have over 30 years experience in the marine industry, my love of which started as a young child fishing with Dad creating vivid memories and learning valuable lessons that I still use to this day. I went on to spend 10 years in the Royal Australian Navy as a ships Navigator before converting my service experience to the private industry on Sydney Harbour. I started selling boats for Riviera in 2001 and was awarded a number of sales awards during that time over which I would estimate I sold and helped survey some 400 boats of all shapes and sizes. As a brokerage business, MW Marine continually strives to be the best, not the biggest, and in the last 5 years have coordinated and successfully completed the purchase and sales process for countless buyers and vendors alike.

In 2014 I decided to further enhance my skills set and taking all of my experience set about formalising my life and business experiences through study by undertaking a Diploma of Maritime Studies (Marine Surveyor) from the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS) which is endorsed Nationally by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Having completed that course recently I am proud to say that although our 2 operations are separate I feel the experience and knowledge learned through our brokerage and sales experience and having done many surveys from the buyers and sellers perspective we are in a unique position to offer a valuable service to the marine industry.

In 1985 several marine surveyors who were engaged in private commercial practice were concerned about the standards of marine surveying. They decided to meet with a view to establishing an Association that could identify and establish professional standards for surveyors and encourage the continual development of the surveying industry.
It was also seen as important that an Association would be able to represent surveyors who met these high standards and promote the use and employment of professional surveyors with federal and state government maritime authorities and large maritime organisations. The surveyors developed an establishment plan and in 1986 The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (A.l.M.S) was fully established and its objectives were focused on:

  • Establishing, promoting and maintaining the specialised discipline of marine surveying.
  • Providing and supporting a code of conduct and ethics allied to the values of integrity, responsibility and service.
  • Seeking approval and recognition by governmental, professional and industrial institutions on the basis of demonstrated knowledge and skills.
  • Providing a body of knowledge, arrived at from lengthy periods of theoretical training, in conjunction with practical experience.

WHAT WILL WE DO

MWM Marine Surveys provide an in depth assessment and opinion of the vessels condition either prior to purchase or during ownership if required. Generally the inspection will be non intrusive and the boat will need to be slipped for an out of water inspection to check the underwater fittings and running gear. In most cases the hull will need to be cleaned by water basting or scraping.

On completion of the inspection we will provide a detailed and comprehensive written report in an easy to read format. Any defects are clearly noted with suggestions for repair and are classified in order of priority.

Our survey fee will cover all travel costs, the survey inspection and survey report but will not cover slipping fees and a mechanical inspection if you choose to have one. Our fees are based on completing the survey in one day and payment in full is required at the date of inspection and prior to communication of the survey report.

We will be able to provide you with a quote over the phone or you can fill out the contact form and we will call or email you directly. Importantly, our fee assumes that we will walk on and walk off the vessel with any logistics involved in slipping or moving the boat left up to the owner or broker.

As the survey is a complex process and we want to provide you with the detail you require the following are some tips to make sure it runs smoothly.

  • Access to the vessel, key locations etc are communicated clearly
  • Slipping logistics are confirmed as well as mechanical logistics if required
  • An inventory of the vessel and its inclusions is provided where possible
  • The vessel is de cluttered of personal items to allow easy access
